This case study outlines a recent project that was completed this year for a client who runs the Bristol Music Industry Network (BMIN). The aim of this project was to redesign and develop a new website for BMIN to get a fresh start and a fresh look after the slow down caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Process
After gaining a master’s degree in project management, I wanted to ensure that I used the skills learned in that degree to my advantage during this project. So I decided to used Design Thinking 101 along with Kanban and Scrum. This kept the project moving forward, helped me break down and track my tasks, whilst also being transparent and keeping a continuous an open communication line between myself and the client.
Design
To design this website, I decided. to use Figma for both the wireframe and prototyping of this website. This was a change of software compared to Adobe Xd and the reason behind this was because Adobe Xd is not longer being updated and Figma has just, plainly, overtaken Xd.
Development
The website was then developed using WordPress and the Elementor plugin. The development involved a mixture of WordPress page development, block development and code development to make the entire site work as cohesive as possible.
Hinderances
There were a couple of hinderances. The ones that stick out to me were more technical than website related. These included hosting and email accounts. This was the first time that I had migrated a website under my full control, so there was a slight learning curve to that. This was more so the fact with email accounts and DNS records. However, with a bit of patience from both the client and myself, I managed to figure everything out and now everything works smoothly and all services are centralised under one roof.
Conclusion
As this is my first independent project, I am highly satisifed with the end result. I proved to myself that I can do this on my own and not just a redesign or a development, but the whole package from server hosting, domain and email management to designing and developing a website, that earns money, from scratch.
